There are a whole host of new lipstick trends to experiment with this season. Here's our pick of the most flattering
From the runway-ready blurred lip to classic shades of berry, autumn’s lip trends are all about making a statement. Megan Mosley, Partner & Make-Up Buyer is on hand to explain this season’s biggest beauty looks and share her top product recommendations. She says “lipstick is a great and easy way to try something new for the new season” and we couldn’t agree more.
If you want a formula that’s going to last all day, then your best bet is a matte lipstick. Luckily, there are plenty of new and innovative variations on the market which will help you achieve your favourite new-season looks in just one swipe. Read on as we reveal the power lipstick players you need to know this season.
The blurred lip
A soft, more romantic take on matte lipstick, blurred lips are autumn’s most contemporary beauty story. Think of this trend as the lipstick equivalent to the slept-in smoky eye - it’s easy to do and best of all, any smudges or imperfections work as part of the look.
Recreate this catwalk-inspired lipstick trend with CHANEL’s Rouge Allure Liquid Powder. Squeeze a small amount of the lip colour on to your lips and then smooth over with the in-built sponge applicator for a softly diffused appearance. The creamy formula has a powder-like matte finish which helps you achieve that coveted lived-in look with minimal effort.
The power lip
The empowering red lip never went out of fashion, but this autumn it’s bigger than ever. As 2018 marked the centenary celebrations of women being given the vote, it’s no surprise make-up artists took their inspiration from leading ladies throughout history for this season’s runway beauty looks. Megan says she never tires of this trend simply because of “the instant confidence boost it gives you.” Liberate your lips with a bold and intense shade; we love Giorgio Armani’s Rouge D'Armani Matte lipstick which provides amazing colour payoff due to its highly pigmented and comfortable formula.
Megan also recommends the Dior Ultra Rouge lipstick, explaining “for dry lips, try a semi-matte lipstick as these are often more hydrating and comfortable to wear. Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge includes plant-based oils to hydrate the lips throughout the day.”
The sharply sculpted lip
Does the idea of smudged make-up have you running for the hills? If so, then sharply sculpted lipstick is the trend for you. The antithesis to its blurred counterpart, this look relies on the precise application of bold matte colour for a statement autumnal lip.
Megan explains, “this trend is perfect if you want to create the illusion of a fuller lip or exaggerate your cupid’s bow.” If you’re short on time then choose a multi-tasking product like the Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Slim Matte lipstick. The unique slim square bullet means you can skip using lip liner and go straight in with your lipstick, while still achieving the defined application this trend requires.
The berry lip
If florals are for spring, then berries are most definitely for autumn. Dark berry lips are the ubiquitous beauty signifier of the colder months arriving and Megan notes this trend is “a great way to add a seasonal edge and more drama to your make-up look.” Tom Ford is known for its iconic lipsticks and the deep berry shades from the Lip Colour Satin Matte range are perfect for this look. If you’re struggling to keep your lips looking full and juicy throughout the day, Megan advises to “rub a small amount of clear balm over the top of your lipstick with your ring finger, this will replenish your lips and give a semi-matte finish”.
