Wickerwork is back! We pick some of the chicest examples so you can create a stylish interior

With both timeless and classless appeal, wicker is enjoying the limelight right now. But what’s the on-trend 2022 interpretation of wickerwork looking like?

One of the largest and current movements in interiors is to seek out items that don’t just look good, but are sustainable, too. Add in a dose of mid-century design flair as well, and you’ve found a winning combination.

Wickerwork can provide both of these things. Because it uses natural wood materials, including certain fast-growing forms of cane, wicker replenishes quicker than other materials and is considered naturally more sustainable. Wickerwork also experienced vivid and successful revivals during the 1960s and especially the 1970s, giving it retro panache and kudos.

It’s the more recent mid-century style cues that are providing the design base for today’s reinterpretation. Let’s take a look at some of the key pieces forming part of the 2022 design scene…

A warm welcome

Guest beds don’t need to just be practical, they should be stylish, too. This Rattan Wrapped Guest Bed design, with its curved edge and wickerwork panel detailing, certainly looks the business. It’s also airy, stylish and made from solid oak. Overnight visitors will be impressed.

Take a seat

The Desser Pretzel Rattan Lounge Chair is possibly the most outrageous piece of design that we’re offering up in this edit. Aside from the name (and the shape) reminding us of one of our favourite snacks, this wickerwork lounge chair has 1970s style in spades.

A wicker wardrobe

Why so square? Playful wardrobe designs are emerging. And guess what? They have wickerwork detailing. Adding a curved top to a big piece of furniture such as this Rattan Double Wardrobe softens its presence in the room and gives it a more fun feeling than many of the usual offerings. The wickerwork panelling also creates an airier and brighter feel than solid-fronted pieces. This, folks, is a design win-win.

A subtle style cue

Don’t worry if an entirely wicker piece is too much of a statement for you – you can find buys that use the vibe as a subtle style cue. Wickerwork as a design detail works very well, as shown by items such as this contemporary Rattan Asymmetric Desk. Keep your eyes peeled and you’ll begin to spot wickerwork details in everything, from small interiors accessories to big-ticket buys such as sofas and wardrobes.

Shine the light

Wickerwork is even being deployed in outdoor lighting. Looking super sculptural, this Rattan Solar Powered Garden Lantern is not only kinder to the environment – storing energy from the sun – but it also creates an excellent pattern of light and shadow when lit up.

Take the wickerwork look outdoors

Ok, so this isn’t technically wickerwork, as it’s not made of a wooden material, but the Salsa 4-Seater Round Garden Dining Table & Chairs Set does bring the same 1970s style vibe to the garden, patio or balcony. You can always opt for more classic rattan garden furniture, but if you want a fun style statement on the lawn, this is definitely what you should be looking for. It’s ideal for a garden party – when the weather is finally warm enough.

Lounge around

After dancing to some glam rock around the living room, you’ll need a seat to slink into and relax. This rattan number has incredible curve appeal (there’s not a straight line on it…) and is the perfect spot to sit back and sip an ice-cold Tom Collins. Add a witty paper parasol to the drink to complete the look. The Desser Shanghai Rattan Lounge Chair is also available in black.

Nothing lights up a room like a sunburst mirror

With its spiky sunburst shape, the Libra Toba Large Rattan Round Wall Mirror has serious finesse and easily stands out when compared with the more common mirror shapes. Style it up solo, or hang three together for a real wicker-style statement.
