Wet-to-styled hair in one tool? Zero attachments? This is a BIG day
ghd says it’s achieved the impossible. With 21 years’ heated styling experience, its engineers have married the science of convection and conduction (they’re calling it AIRFUSION™) and created – drumroll please – the ghd Duet Style.
Combining hot air with styling plates and, crucially, without causing damage, the Duet Style is the stuff of (hair-related) dreams. It’s no wonder the globe’s gone giddy. Celebrity hair stylist Adam Reed, who’s worked with the likes of Reese Witherspoon and Harry Styles, says: ‘The Duet Style will truly change the way that we style hair.’
We say: YES ghd! And thank you. But also, does it actually work? And *whispers* how does it compare to the Dyson Airwrap?
First up, the headlines:
‘So, how do you usually style your hair?’ asks your hairdresser. It’s a question that can make millions of us (read: me) feel instantly sheepish, as we gesture vaguely at our heads, mumbling something about, um, side-partings and early starts.
Truthfully? I’m lucky if I blowdry my hair. Styling is reserved for special occasions, or Saturdays when time is on my side. Sure, I’ve tried many a variation of stylers in the name of work – trialling hyped new hair tool after hyped new hair tool, each one promising the solution to meh hair days.
There’s something different about the ghd Duet Style. It marks a tangible step change in beauty tech. This could be THE solution… for those of us who get up at silly o’ clock, for whom styling, preening, coiffuring and zhuzhing is but a distant memory. For those of us looking for a fast, fuss-free, getting-ready routine, minus all the faffing with endless attachments. For anyone who wants wet-to-styled, smooth, silky hair, stat.
The Duet could be the answer to our hair prayers.
This is where the magic happens. With a touch of a button the airflow stops and the tool transforms into a ghd styler, working at the optimum styling temperature of 185C for twice the shine and smoother, frizz-free hair, in a shot.
Miraculously, ghd says no. I was sceptical too – but you can pass the styler over hair up to four times, with no more heat damage than from a traditional flat iron.
ghd recommends using the Duet alongside Sleek Talker – a styling oil with heat protection that helps smooth and soften.
New and existing My John Lewis members get a free ghd Styling Oil when purchased with the Duet Style. Apply promo code MYJLGHD at the checkout.
Yes – though the thicker your hair, the more you’ll need to section.
The Duet Style isn’t as weighty as it looks and was surprisingly easy to manoeuvre. As someone who’s never quite mastered the whole shaping-with-flat-irons schtick, this was music to my ears.
Speaking of ears, it’s quieter than a dryer – great news if you’re trying to style while others are still asleep. It does sound a smidgeon spaceship-y, but is quiet enough to hold a conversation.
It does! So well, in fact, that I could cry happy, joy-inducing, time-saving, liberating, great-hair-making-miracle tears. And I’m not being dramatic. OK fine, maybe a touch.
The Duet was super easy to use – but yes, if you have thick, curlier hair you’ll need to section it (and section it again). And I'm not convinced it’ll be The One for anyone who prefers curling their hair with a flat iron or barrel attachment.
Duet’s closest competitor – the ‘dries and styles’ Dyson Airwrap Multi Hair Styler – is £479.99 and, straight or curls, you have to switch attachments mid-style.
ghd’s Original (and great) Hair Styler is £129 and their five-star-rated Helios Hair Dryer is £179. Bought together, that’s £308. So yes, for £379, the Duet Style is still an investment.
Having said that, if time is money (and it is), the savings you’ll make on your morning routine are worth every penny – my hair went from wet to styled in three minutes flat. Plus the Duet comes with all the unboxing feels that sneakerheads crave and – if it’s anything like my OG ghd – it’ll last years.
If you need a new hairdryer or your styling iron is kaput – do double up with a Duet. You won’t regret it.
