The top-rated £45 silk pillowcase

Gilly Ferguson,-Writer

With almost 500 impeccable reviews promising less bed head and fewer face creases come the morning, we make a case for switching to silk

There’s no denying it, silk pillowcases have star appeal (Victoria Beckham, Chrissy Teigen, Kris Jenner and Shay Mitchell are all mega fans) but this bougie bedroom buy isn’t solely for the rich and famous.

The best silk pillowcases for healthy skin and hair are said to be anti-sleep crease, anti bed head, wrinkle-relaxing and may even help to prolong your blowout. Oh, and they don’t come with a celebrity price tag.

With 47% of adults saying they ‘would try anything’ to improve their quality of sleep, what are the real benefits of a pure silk pillowcase? How does it compare to cotton? Will it help me to sleep better? What is the difference between Mulberry silk and Momme? Are silk pillowcases worth the money? Do they really work? Should I make the switch from ordinary to silk?

So many questions! If, like me, you’re yet to reap the benefits of a soothing silk pillowcase, this review’s for you.

John Lewis The Ultimate Collection Silk Standard Pillowcase, White

What is it?

The deluxe Ultimate Collection Silk Pillowcase is blissfully soft (and available in an impressive 13 colourways). Made from 19-momme Mulberry silk (renowned for its skin and hair benefits) it feels deliciously luxurious and soothing to the touch.

But did you know that all silk is not created equal? (I did not). The highest-quality silk is Mulberry silk, the most durable and also the softest, which makes it ideal for high-use pieces, like a pillowcase. It’s also naturally hypoallergenic, great news for sensitive skin.

The momme bit? Momme (pronounced ‘mommy’) refers to the weight in lbs of a 45 inch x 100 yard piece of silk, just in case it comes up at your next pub quiz. The tighter the weave, the more silk is used, giving it a higher weight and momme count.

This 19-momme Mulberry silk is durable, with just the right amount of drape. You could call it the mother of all momme (sorry).

Bedroom

Why do you need it?

Durable, decadent and worth every penny, this sleeping beauty was created with real life in mind – put simply, the benefits of silk are endless. How?

1. It’s more moisture-repellent than other fabrics – helping your skin to stay hydrated overnight so it stays supple and your night cream works even harder

2. It reduces friction – which means less wrinkling and creasing on delicate skin, no matter how much you toss and turn. It also makes it kinder to your hair, reducing breakage. Which is why pure silk hair wraps work so well on curly and afro hair. ‎

3. Silk fibres are naturally hypoallergenic and temperature regulating – the result? Silk makes every side of your pillow the ‘cool side’.

I’ve also been lightly spritzing the best lavender pillow spray onto my pillowcase and pyjamas each night too (lavender is proven to increase slow-wave sleep, lower the heart rate and reduce anxiety) for an even more satisfying slumber. A surefire way to boost your bedtime.

The metrics that matter

How long will it last? A single silk fibre is stronger than an equal thickness of steel (seriously) and they bind together easily, making silk fabric very durable. Put simply, these pillowcases will last you just as long as those made from cotton or linen.

Can I wash and iron a silk pillowcase?Yes! Turn the pillowcase inside out put on a cool hand wash, inside a fine mesh laundry bag – use a silk liquid detergent, and no fabric softener. Don’t wring, twist or tumble dry. Cool iron to smooth out wrinkles.

Value for moneyIt’s pricier than cotton, sure, but this silky pleasure sits at a lower price point than its competitors. In my opinion, it’s worth every penny.

Is it worth it?

Yes! This (the best) silk pillowcase is worthy of its nearly 500 reviews. My hair is less static, and far more manageable since I switched. It’s also helped me to create a better bedtime routine, and feels so treaty – like sleeping on a cloud (I imagine). If you spend money on your skincare or haircare routine, a silk pillowcase is a no-brainer, at any age. DO ditch ordinary for 100% silk!

A word of warning though – once you sleep on silk, you’re hooked. And I should know, I’ve just treated my face to a silk eye mask too…
