Find the perfect TV for your viewing passion
Whether you’re a film buff or a gaming addict, a design lover or a fitness fan, these next generation TVs promise to revolutionise your viewing experience
Delivering news, films, video games and our favourite Netflix shows, TVs need to work harder than ever these days. Good job, then, that the latest models combine slick design with improved affordability and clever technology. Smart TV operating platforms with voice-control functionality will help you decide what to watch as well as when and how you watch it, while a new generation of slim, design-led models will complement your living space.
If you’re looking for unprecedented picture quality, there are OLED displays, 8K screen resolution and NanoCell technology. ‘While 8K content is not yet available, the latest 8K models can upscale 4K picture quality, making for a truly immersive experience,’ says Partner & TV buyer Katrina Mills. ‘Samsung’s range features anti-reflection screens and uses AI upscaling, HDR 2000 and Object Tracking Sound to optimise picture and sound performance.’
OLED TVs deliver the whitest whites and darkest blacks along with outstanding colour contrast and detail. They’re also more energy efficient. ‘This year’s models are more affordable and now available in a 48” screen size which means you don’t need to make room for a supersize screen to enjoy OLED picture quality,’ says Katrina. LG and Sony both offer 48" OLED smart TVs.
LG’s NanoCell technology is slightly different, using an LCD screen with tiny nanoparticles to filter and purify colours for a stunningly vivid image. The Nano806 is the latest version of LG’s flagship product.
Film buffs should look out for TVs with filmmaker mode. This feature removes post-processing, allowing movie fans to view films as the director intended. Try the Panasonic TX-65JX800B.
If you want the best possible gaming experience, invest in a TV with the latest HDMI 2.1-standard ports. HDMI 2.1 enables a 3D graphics processor to render and display images in real time, resulting in more fluid gameplay and greater detail. Try the Samsung QE55Q70T, which includes Game Enhancer+ to help you unlock the potential of 4K gaming TV technology.
With TVs becoming works of art in their own right, design devotees will be spoilt for choice. When you’re not watching TV shows or playing games, Samsung’s The Frame turns into an art display, complete with authentic bezel frame. The same company's The Serif TV, meanwhile, is designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec – it sits on an elegant freestanding base and becomes a design piece when it’s not in use.
