The cardigan’s big comeback

It’s the perfect cold weather layer and comes in a shape to suit everyone; raise a cheer to the cardigan being back in vogue. 

Of course the cardigan has never actually gone anywhere; it’s simply been superseded by oversize rollneck jumpers and androgynous crew necks in the desirability stakes. But take a few heavyweight catwalk designers re-spinning this quintessentially English wardrobe staple, and some inspiring ideas for how to style one, and the cardigan is suddenly popular once more. 

‘As the ever-changeable weather plays havoc with our wardrobes, the cardigan comes into play as an essential new-season winner due to its versatility,’ says Iain Ewing, Partner & Design Manager for womenswear and accessories. ‘They are a great layering piece that can either be a key part of an outfit or an easy throw on when needed. They are also a great alternative to outerwear when the weather isn’t quite cold enough to wear your winter coat yet.’

Frankie Graddon, fashion journalist and co-founder of The Wingwoman, agrees. 'Casting off frumpy connotations, this season's cardigan has elevated appeal. The signature silhouette has been reinterpreted (oversized, cropped, long-line and with statement sleeves) and realised in myriad covetable prints and colour-ways.' Her tips for styling one include layering over a rollneck with corduroy trousers ‘for a '70s spin on daywear’. Or, ‘for evening try a cocktail cardigan – think beaded embroidery, lurex, sequins – tucked into a pair of velvet trousers or over a slinky slip dress.'

A form-fitting cashmere cardigan is guaranteed to keep you warm and looks anything but twee when worn as a top in its own right – simply omit any layers underneath and tuck it into a pencil skirt or high-waisted jeans. For an artfully undone look, try leaving one side untucked. And, as Iain suggests, try a more generously proportioned silhouette as a cosy transitional piece, instead of a coat or jacket.
