Think rouge is just for winter? Think again
We’re huge fans of red lipstick in winter - groundbreaking, we know. But a scarlet pout isn’t just for Christmas - now that summer’s making an appearance, it's time to make like Taylor Swift and embrace Red for all seasons.
"A red lipstick is a classic makeup staple which has stood the test of time," explains John Lewis makeup buyer Laurie Cilberto. "When you wear a red lip people are instantly drawn to your mouth and what you are saying, so it's the perfect accompaniment when you have a big meeting, an interview or an important occasion. It's also a foolproof way to add a little excitement to a pared-back outfit."
Had a bad experience with red and now convinced it's not for you? it’s important to remember that red isn't a one-shade-fits-all colour, so it’s likely you just need a different tone for your skin.
How to wear red lipstick
There are many ways to apply a red lip to dial up and down the colour. "Sometimes I'll apply a small amount to the middle of my bottom lip and then use my finger to blend across the rest of my lips, to create a softer, blurred finish," says Laurie. "Another way to adapt the red lip is by using a red lip tint (like Benefit Plushtint, Red Velvet) and applying a gloss over the top. This creates a more playful finish to the classic red lip."
How to find the best red lipstick for you
"If you have a warmer skin tone, try bold reds or orange-reds (like Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution, Hollywood Vixen) and if you have a cooler undertone pinky reds tend to work well (like Mac Ruby Woo)," says Laurie.
