Make laundry less of a chore with the help of the latest hi-tech washing machines and tumble dryers

From AI that detects the type of fabric you’re washing, to super-quick cycles that make dirty togs sparkle in under 15 minutes; the new generation of washing machines are designed to save you time, money and energy.

Whether you’re after a whisper-quiet multitasker or an energy-saver that can cope with family-sized loads, our expert guide will help you find your perfect fit.

Best for small spaces

If you’re buying a washing machine or washer-dryer for a smaller home – or to fit in (and with) an open-plan living space – appliances that are discreet and quiet will be top of your wish list.

‘Built-in appliances offer the same functionality as freestanding washing machines but can be neatly hidden – great for open-plan living,’ says Jake Roberts, John Lewis Partner & Large Electricals Buyer. ‘We also stock a number of Quiet Mark awarded appliances, which are ideal if you’re looking to keep noise levels down.’

Picking an all-in-one washer-dryer is another great way to save space. Miele’s WTD165 Freestanding Washer Dryer has a quiet, efficient motor and can wash up to 8kg and dry up to 5kg of laundry in one cycle.

Best for small loads and quick washes

If you live on your own, or with one other person, you can opt for a budget-friendly, low-capacity machine that takes a 6-8kg load.

‘Bosch’s WAJ28008GB is a great all-rounder and, thanks to its SpeedPerfect feature, you can reduce cycle times by up to 65 per cent,’ says Jake.

And for those times when you just can’t wait? ‘A quick-wash option is one of the top things customers consider when buying a washing machine,’ Jake reveals. ‘Miele has a great PowerWash function that cleans laundry to a high standard in just 49 minutes.’

Best for big families

For larger households, a machine that can handle a (really) big load is a major win, as it reduces the need to do multiple smaller washes throughout the week. ‘Bosch makes a range of washing machines with a capacity of 10kg and over, each at keen price points,’ says Jake. ‘Perfect for families on a budget.’

Best smart washing machines

‘Smart appliances are becoming increasingly popular as they help to make customers’ lives easier,’ says Jake.

‘Some AI-enabled machines have auto-dosing technology, which calculates the optimum amount of detergent for a wash based on the type of clothes and how dirty they are.

‘Brands such as Samsung and LG are really championing smart technology; Samsung’s smart machines allow you to start or stop washes remotely, while LG uses AI to measure your laundry’s weight and detect fabric type, choosing the best programme for you to keep clothes looking their best.’

Best eco-friendly and energy-efficient machines

We’re all looking for ways to be more sustainable and do our bit for the environment. Good news for conscious shoppers: choosing a washing machine or washer-dryer with a high energy-efficiency rating can help you to minimise your environmental impact and also save you money. That’s what we call a win-win.

Bosch is a leader in energy efficiency,’ says Jake. ‘Its A+++ ratings are down to years of research and development. Longer wash times at lower temperatures save energy, so the Eco mode sees your clothes gently soaked and agitated while heat builds slowly in the drum.’

Samsung is also an innovator in the field of low-heat washing; its ecobubble™ technology mixes air, water and detergent to create bubbles that allow you to wash your clothes at cooler temperatures, helping reduce energy use.
