What to wear to a virtual Christmas party
Feeling more ‘Bah humbug!’ than holiday ready? These pieces will put you in a much better mood
It’s a concept none of us ever thought we’d be faced with: a Christmas party without people. But here we are, at Christmas time, preparing to celebrate virtually. And no matter whether you’re secretly enjoying the lack of face-to-face events or would do anything to be back out there, now’s the time to embrace the new reality and dress the (virtual) part.
Going all out: tuxedo or two-piece
If you’re not ready to throw in the towel on Christmas celebrations, reach for the piece most synonymous with Christmas parties: the tuxedo jacket. By forgoing a bow tie and swapping a dress shirt for a trusty white T-shirt, you’ll bring a more modern, dressed-down tone. If that’s still a little too much, pick up a new suit jacket in a deep winter hues such as red, green or brown – it’s on-trend and altogether more interesting than a navy or black version.
Minimal effort, maximum output: festive accessories
No, we don’t mean plopping a santa hat on top of your head and calling it a day. If you do want to prove that you’re making a celebratory effort but you’re not keen on going all out, add a festive scarf (in checks, stripes or colour blocks), a boldly-coloured tie or a beanie to what you’re already planning on wearing. It’s one step less than a full-on Christmas outfit but at least it shows that you’re trying.
Getting in the mood: Christmas jumper
When it comes to Christmas jumpers, the devil really is in the detail. And while you might shudder at the thought of adding one of these festive favourites to your undoubtedly polished winter wardrobe, hear us out. We’re talking less novelty Rudolph and more chic Fair Isle or Argyle, a pattern that’ll instantly add character to whatever else you’re wearing.
The perfect halfway house: elevated loungewear
Loungewear has gotten a lot of airtime this year, saving most of us from dreary days spent in our pyjamas and comforting us when the rule of six didn’t quite cut it. But have you considered stepping out of what you’ve been wearing for the last eight months and adding elevated versions to your winter wardrobe? If you’re not in the mood to dress up, the blend of style and comfort could be the answer to all your Christmas dressing conundrums. Choose pieces with cuffed ankles or wrists to add a slick silhouette and pair them with relaxed pieces such as a long-sleeved polo shirt, cashmere socks and a chunky cable-knit jumper.
