Buying a suit online doesn’t have to be complicated – just follow our tips from the experts

When it comes to online suit shopping, many find it hard to trust that it’s going to fit properly, let alone look good. But with a few tips and tricks up your sleeve, you’ll be surprised at just how easy it can be. We spoke to Aleksandar Cvetkovic, menswear journalist and host of HandCut Radio podcast, on how to find an impeccably designed and flattering suit online.

Learn how to measure yourself properly

‘The best thing to do is to lay out a jacket or pair of trousers that fit you well on the floor, and measure them up with a tape measure,’ explains Aleksandar. Different brands will have different size guides, but the more familiar you get with your own sizing, the easier it will become.

Consider your skintone

Not every man will suit every colour, and learning what works best with your skintone is a huge piece of the puzzle. ‘Midnight blue and classic navy always look polished, but less is always more when it comes to suiting,’ Aleksandar continues. ‘Mid-greys and charcoal will work with almost every complexion, but very light greys can wash out pale skin. A soft brown suit with a powder blue poplin shirt is a great way to be the best dressed man in the room.’

Pick the right fabrics for the right seasons

Investing in a new suit per season may seem like a tall order, but it’s important to ensure that each one serves a purpose, come rain or shine. Take the time to learn which fabrics work for each season: for winter, choose flannel or wool and come summer, pick linen and cotton. ‘For an evening suit, I recommend a wool and mohair mix,’ Aleksandar says. ‘The mohair lends a natural sheen that looks more dressy after-hours.’

Have a clear picture of what you’re looking for

What are you buying a suit for? Is it for everyday wear or a special occasion? ‘Think about the kind of silhouette you’re working towards generally; peaked lapels are a little dressier than notched lapels,’ explains Aleksandar. ‘And double-breasted suits can add a welcome sense of stature to a business suit, as can a waistcoat.’ And remember that if something doesn’t fit you 100% perfectly, you can always visit our in-store alteration service.
