Wondering how to negotiate the tricky waters of spring fashion? Here are half-a-dozen style solutions

It finally feels like the end of a gloomy year is in sight. But if you’re not quite ready to wave goodbye to your lived-in pyjamas and sweatshirts, and step into the great unknown, we’ve got six new season pieces – all for under £55 – to put a spring in your step and get you ready to make the ultimate first impression.

1.

An everyday overshirt

Smart yet casual and easy to wear with just about everything, a trusted overshirt should be at the top of your spring wishlist. Its versatility is what is so attractive about it, particularly if you pick a staple neutral tone like navy, grey or khaki. Wear undone or done up, depending on where you’re heading, and be sure to keep this one in regular rotation until winter comes back around.

2.

A colourful jumper

If you have a penchant for black, grey and barely anything else, it’s time to think about adding in a bright colour for spring. You don’t have to go the whole hog, but weaving in something light and bright will lift your spirits – and those of anyone around you. When you’ve picked your colour of choice (we’re particularly keen on this blue sweater from Kin), make sure to keep the rest of your outfit muted and neutral so that the colour stands out on its own.

3.

A chore jacket

Chore jackets are nothing new, but they consistently come back around season after season for one very good reason: they look great. The cooler, more casual brother to a blazer, you can get away with wearing the right kind of chore jacket everywhere from a work meeting to a first date – just make sure you’re opting for a different tone and texture on your bottom half to avoid any comparisons to a suit.

4.

Shoes that aren’t slippers

If you’ve been working from home, homeschooling, or just staying inside more than usual since last March, you can probably count on one hand the number of times you’ve had to actually tie a pair of shoelaces. That’s all about to change, though, so we suggest you ease in slowly. Pick a comfortable, lightweight pair of trainers that you can get away with for work and then, when the time is right, you can ease yourself into something smarter. Our favourites? This simple canvas pair from our own brand collection.

5.

Loose-leg trousers

It’s likely that you’ve been all baggy trousers and elasticated waist for the last 12 months, so we’re keen to ease you out slowly. Rather than attempting to squeeze into your tightest trousers, try a looser and more casual silhouette for spring. Utility-inspired pieces are still everywhere, and they look brilliant with everything from a plain white tee and sweatshirt to a shirt and chore jacket.

6.

Sunglasses for spring

Whether you’re shielding your eyes from the sun’s glare or the fact that there are more people on your commute than there have been for a year, you’re going to need a fresh new pair of sunglasses for spring. Picking a classic shape like a round eye is your best bet: they suit everyone and look good for all occasions, from now until the very best of the winter sun.
