The right top will see you through everything the party season has to offer. Here’s our expert guide

The pandemic has taught us a lot of things about getting dressed-up – and a key lesson is to never underestimate the power of an outfit solely from the waist up. After all, ‘jeans and a nice top’ was the going out-out uniform for revellers in the early Noughties (for the dinner-party generation, the skill lay in pairing a fabulous pair of earrings with a printed blouse). But then along came cocktail dresses and jazzy jumpsuits, and the humble top lost out.

It made a return, however, in 2020’s somewhat abbreviated party season and the good news is that the statement top seems to be here to stay. From those dipped in sequins to something seductively lacy, here’s your guide to the tops you’re going to love this Christmas.

Headline blouses

If a cocktail dress feels like a sartorial move too far after last year’s party hiatus, try a blouse with star quality. Whether that’s a pussy-bow style or one with an embellished neckline, there’s plenty of choice out there to help jazz up a pair of tailored trousers.

Power sleeves

Sharp-shouldered blazers haven’t been spied since early 2020 and the party circuit has definitely moved on. But those pining for a bit of shoulder volume can scratch the itch with a puff-sleeve or a silhouette with generous balloon sleeves.

Strictly for sequin lovers

Like mulled wine and depressing episodes of Eastenders, sequins are what Christmas is all about. A sequin top is the most versatile way to indulge in the shimmery stuff this winter. Not least because you can wear one in a pub beer garden without looking like you’ve lost your way en route to the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Wear yours with denim or layered under a sloppy cashmere cardi for a look that whispers ‘It’s Christmas’ instead of screaming it.

The LBT

Much like its dressier cousin, the little black top is versatile, timeless and completely dependable. Choose wisely and you’ll be reaching for yours for seasons to come. The best little black tops bypass seasonal trends in favour of supreme quality and a great fit. For a low-key festive look that’s dance-floor ready, team yours with kick flare denim and your favourite pair of trainers or a wafty slip skirt for a nod to grunge-inspired glamour.

Pop that collar

The final option is to swerve the yuletide dress code altogether with a pastel or floral blouse topped off with a huge collar. Feminine, frivolous and right on-trend, this is neckline-focused dressing that doesn’t rely on flashing the flesh. Look out for ruffle or lace-trimmed styles – and if you want to echo the gifts under the tree then have fun with a pussy bow.
