A love letter to dungarees

Dungarees styling tips

Park the overall jokes – denim dungarees are enjoying a long-overdue moment

I’ve been a convert to dungarees for a while – and no, it’s nothing to do with emulating the style of my two small children. It started with a tailored black wool pair that felt more playful than a traditional trouser, and which could be dressed up for the office with myriad tops underneath. They weren't a radical purchase as such, but did feel like a break from the norm. Then followed a relaxed, cropped denim style for summer, and this winter I welcomed a blue corduroy pair into my wardrobe from Baukjen.

What’s the appeal? Well, having children has had some bearing – playing on the floor without a waistline digging into your middle is a comfort that’s hard to beat. And as someone who is prone to repeat wearing whatever is close at hand (a habit only fuelled further by lockdowns), the layering potential of the dungaree offers the ultimate getting-dressed cheat.

Dunagrees styling

Sarah Clark, a fashion stylist and founder of lifestyle platform Little Spree, agrees. She ‘rediscovered’ dungarees a decade ago – not having worn them since she and her sister had matching denim pairs as children. ‘I love that they have the “pulled together” appeal of a dress, but how they are a bit cooler, relaxed and boyish,’ she says. ‘At the last count I had seven pairs and I like to style them with feminine tops and blouses underneath. I also love an oversized striped shirt with my denim pairs, worn with ballet flats.’

Seasoned in pulling together desirable outfits, Sarah advises dungaree newbies to opt for a slim shape, particularly through the leg (‘Too baggy and they can feel a bit “painter and decorator” or children’s TV presenter). Also, be prepared to try on lots of pairs before hitting the jackpot. ‘It’s all about the proportions, so you need to put in the legwork to find the perfect pair for you,’ says Sarah

Tempted? You won’t look back… and if you’re always misplacing your phone, Sarah points out that the front pocket is also very handy for storing your tech.
