The ugly trainer switch-up
Chunky, bright, eye-catching. There’s no missing the new trainer trend – will you try it?
‘Ugly’, ‘chunky’, ‘dad sneakers’… this new trainer style goes by various names, and the aesthetic is utterly distinctive. Miles away from the sleek profiles of classic, tennis-inspired plimsolls, the ‘ugly’ sneaker is concerned with making a dramatic statement.
First spied on the catwalks, the characteristics are thick soles, bold colours and utility-inspired detailing. And it’s a look that is gathering momentum. ‘Fashion trends tend to come around full circle, so we’re witnessing a stark move away from low-profile plimsolls,’ says Ffion Lloyd, Partner & Assistant Buyer, Women’s Shoes.
Ffion is excited to be stocking Victoria Shoes this season, a family-owned brand established more than 100 years ago in Rioja, Spain. The styles are directional and fun, with chunky silhouettes and hiking loops. ‘They are beautifully crafted shoes which are competitively priced,’ says Ffion. ‘We think they’ll be a big hit.’ She also namechecks versions by Shoe The Bear and Carvela as worth checking out.
Fashion stylist Lucy Walker is a convert. ‘I love the fact that this is a genuinely comfortable style to be getting on board with. It’s great that you can run all over town and do what you need to do while looking fashion-forward.’
So, how best to style your sneakers? ‘I wouldn’t put them with anything too sporty, like hoodies, leggings or even jeans,’ advises Lucy. ‘It’s all about elevating them. My favourite way is with tailoring, whether that’s a suit or a pair of tailored trousers with a nice knit.’ Printed midi dresses also work, creating a contrast between an athleisure accent and a more feminine look.
It’s certainly not the end of the line for the plimsolls, but if you’re after an injection of new-season cool, you know where to start.
