Why velvet is your new everyday trend

Lending a luxe touch to your winter outfits, make this star fabric an outfit regular

Velvet is as synonymous with Christmas partywear as pigs in blankets are with turkey. But there’s much more to this rich fabric than nights filled with mulled wine and predictable playlists. Easier to wear beyond the after-dark context of that other favourite party trend, sequins, a touch of velvet adds opulence to wool sweaters and tweed trousers.

The knack, as ever, lies with how you style it. We’ve canvassed some of velvet’s most ardent fans for inspiration on how to wear the velvet trend by day (not a sticky dancefloor in sight).

The everyday jacket

Velvet in all shades reacts so beautifully in natural light, it feels criminal to only ever wear it indoors. A bold jacket or blazer lends a touch of fun to sensible wintry trousers – not to mention your surroundings. It’s also the perfect smart-casual piece for when after-work commitments involve a dinner or drinks and you want to look like you’ve made an effort.

The everyday dress

Opt for a velvet dress with sleeves and you’ll be rewarded with a suitably festive, wear-everywhere staple. Layer it with a black rollneck underneath; dress it down with a slouchy knit; team it with chunky boots – your options are limitless.

The everyday suit

A velvet two-piece with a rollneck and trainers is no more daring than a woollen suit, especially in a deliciously deep moss green or navy hue. And as ever with a suit, you end up with a three-for-one outfit, in that you can wear each piece independently. Wear with a crisp white shirt for the office, then swap for a lacy camisole if you’re headed somewhere special.

The everyday trousers

Arguably the easiest way to bring velvet to the forefront of your wardrobe is via a pair of trousers. Perfect with printed boots, sporting them with knitwear and winter coats will dress them down while feeling suitably festive.
