It’s officially cold, alas, but cosy season means it’s time to wrap up in smart layers, strokable fabrics and a statement coat

The pressing question that rears its head every winter: how do I look chic while staying warm? Whether you’re braving the elements on a countryside stroll or just attempting not to freeze on the way to work, it’s worth investing in a few incredible pieces that’ll keep you cosy for years.

1. A statement knit

Throwing statement knits into your circulation of winter jumpers and dresses can do wonders for everything from your cold weather colour palette to your mood. Fair Isle, retro prints, a bright colour or an incredible texture – whatever you pick, expect compliments. Big ones.

2. Chunky black boots

Just as useful as blue jeans – chunky black boots are a winter wardrobe hero. Look out for something comfortable that you know will look good with everything from jeans and a chunky jumper to tailored trousers and an overcoat, dresses and beyond.

3. Retro accessories

Bored of your beanie? Give the bucket hat a go. This Nineties-raver must-have has been back on the fashion circuit and worn by trendsetters across the globe for a few years now – and it’s satying for winter. There are a few iterations worth trying: borg, waterproof or cotton.

4. A supersized scarf

A certain Lenny Kravtiz got the world talking way back in 2012 when he wore his ridiculously oversized scarf, but the man was on to something. Chunky scarves are actually pretty practical, more surface area covered by the scarf = less need to layer with a load of T-shirts.

5. A borg jacket

Every winter deserves a fresh new piece of outerwear so instead of going for your fifth wool overcoat, why not try an oversized borg jacket? Double the warmth and equally as stylish as something more trad, a jacket like this works with everything from dresses to gym kit.
