On trial: Dyson’s Supersonic r™ hair dryer
Dyson’s most powerful – yet lightest and smallest – hair dryer is here
Does your hair take ages to dry? If the answer is, like mine, yes, it might be time to consider Dyson’s new Supersonic r™ hair dryer. The brand has long been a leader in the haircare innovation space and now it wants us all to feel – and see – the benefits of its smallest, lightest and fastest-drying hair dryer.
At first glance the design is a little strange looking (it’s a bit like a fancy pipe), but being a Dyson there’s a solid reason for its appearance. The pioneering curved format has been created so you can style and dry hair – even the hard-to-reach sections – effortlessly. Launched to professional stylists last year, this model has seen praise from the likes of Sam McKnight, Eugene Souleiman and Lacy Redway, and now it's available to the likes of me and you.
So, does size really matter? Can this hair dryer really offer your hair a smoother finish, more shine, with no heat damage? I took the tool for a trial run to find out.
What makes the Dyson Supersonic r™ hair dryer special?
I have to start with the revolutionary shape; the enhanced manoeuvrability and comfort completely changes the game, as does the airflow being propelled more evenly through the curve. The result is precise, fast drying. This hair dryer’s power is really quite astonishing.
What’s the difference between the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer and the Dyson Supersonic r™ hair dryer?
The Dyson Supersonic r™ hair dryer is Dyson’s most powerful, yet lightest and most precise hair dryer to date. In numbers, it’s 30 per cent smaller, 20 per cent lighter and more manoeuvrable than the original Supersonic™ hair dryer. Fans of the previous model might not think it possible, but it does deliver faster drying, smoother and shinier results.
What attachments does the Dyson Supersonic r™ hair dryer come with?
The hair dryer comes in two models, with attachments engineered for all hair types. I tested the Straight+Wavy hair dryer and attachments. If you opt for the Curly+Coily hair dryer, the gentle air attachment is replaced by the diffuser, which helps reduce frizz and defines curls, coils and waves, while the smoothing nozzle is switched out for the wide-tooth comb, engineered to de-tangle and lengthen hair as it dries. Incredibly, RFID sensors precisely remember the last-used setting on every attachment, so you don’t have to select power and heat when changing attachments.
Powerful air attachment
Produces high-velocity airflow to dry hair fast.
Professional concentrator
Focuses air precisely where you need it.
Gentle air attachment
Evenly diffuses and smooths air flow so it’s gentler on the scalp.
Smoothing nozzle
Helps deliver more ions for decreased frizz and a smooth, natural finish.
Flyaway attachment
Attracts longer hairs and hides flyaways on finished styles, using the Coanda effect.
Is the Dyson Supersonic r™ hair dryer worth it?
It is, quite simply, the best hair dryer I have ever used. Dyson tells me its Hyperdymium motor spins up to 110,000rpm, propelling high velocity airflow. In truth, I don’t know what that means. All I can say is I have never experienced such a powerful hair dryer; my hair is incredibly thick and this small but perfectly formed tool has it dried and styled in minutes. I love its simplicity (three airflow levels and four heat modes, including a cold shot) and the elegant Ceramic Pink colour.
I’m about to go on holiday with a carry-on case and the Dyson Supersonic r™, along with its powerful air and professional concentrator attachments, is definitely coming with. This hair dryer is very much worth the hype, believe me.
