A tech-savvy alarm clock that’ll wake you up gently by mimicking a sunrise? Sign me up

We’ve talked before about the difficulties of getting enough sleep and the different ways you can make your bedroom into a sleep sanctuary. Once you’ve nailed your eight hours, the last thing you want is to be jolted awake by a loud, irritating alarm that’ll only stop when you drag yourself out of bed to turn it off (or at least hit snooze).

As we’re all in peak hibernation mode, I decided to put the Lumie Bodyclock Luxe table lamp on trial to see if waking up with a natural sunrise could improve my morning mood.

What is it?

In simple terms, the Lumie Bodyclock Luxe 750DAB Wake Up To Daylight Table Lamp is a clock designed to wake you gently with a light that brightens gradually. It uses colour and light to mimic a sunrise so by the time you open your eyes you’re alert.

Using light to start your day in this way instead of being jolted out of sleep has been proven to help mood, productivity and energy levels – something I could use this winter. It’s even been documented that light at the start of the day can reset your internal clock (for those of us a little off-kilter from all the late nights over Christmas), the daily cycle of hormones and metabolism. Frankly, I couldn’t wait to start using it.

Why buy a Lumie Bodyclock Luxe?

Because you deserve to start 2024 with a proper alarm clock so you can finally banish your phone from your bedroom. But the Lumie Bodyclock Luxe is so much more than just a clock.

There’s a fully adjustable light that gives enough brightness to read and has been cleverly designed to minimise blue light, helping you to switch off and unwind.

It has a USB port for playing music or charging your phone (though I’m really trying to get mine out of my bedroom), Bluetooth for streaming music and a DAB/DAB+ radio function. The designers have even added a light-sensitive auto-dimming display, so you won’t be disturbed by a great beam of light coming from the clock face.

Plus, waking up and falling asleep to light is recommended for sufferers of Seasonal Affective Disorder and the winter blues because it helps to regulate your sleep and wake cycles. This clock has even been awarded a medical grade Class 1 after passing rigorous testing by a certification body. Genius.

How easy is it to work?

I’m not confident with tech so this required a lot of concentration to make sure I was using the right lights. Lumie has a really helpful 90-second video that I’d definitely recommend.

Once you get to grips with it you use the main dial to control most things. Set the date and time then programme your alarms (time and sound, if using), favourite radio stations and the brightness of the light – all through the dial.

Is the Lumie Bodyclock Luxe worth it?

Personally, I think so. I have two favourite elements about the clock. Firstly, that there’s a setting to help you drift off using light. I’m a dreadful sleeper and find it really difficult to calm my mind before bed. But the fading light function takes you through the colours of a sunset, from pink and orange to red, and is designed to signal to the body to produce melatonin, which makes you feel naturally drowsy. Reader, it works.

Secondly, I like the fact you can have an alarm noise if you want – sometimes after getting up with the baby four times in the night I worry the sunrise won’t be enough, so I’ve become partial to using the audible alarm a couple of times a week and am a big fan of the ‘fairground music’ and ‘movie projector’ noises (there are 33 to pick from). It’s great to have the option of light and sound.
