Brand information
Established in 1784, John Smedley is known for crafting beautiful, high-quality garments that are designed to last and distributed the world over. The John Smedley story began during the infancy of the Industrial Revolution at their factory in Lea Mills, Derbyshire where you can still find them today, over 230 years later. Historic milestones include early use of fully fashioned knitting machines to create the original 'Long Johns'. Establishing themselves as one of Britain’s most famous clothing brands, John Smedley became the brand of choice for many famous faces, including Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and the Beatles amongst many others and by 1980 they were the go-to knitwear brand for British designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith.
Today, the brand holds a Royal Warrant of Appointment as a 'Manufacturer of Fine Knitwear' from His Majesty King Charles III. Garments are crafted from the finest Extra Fine Merino Wools, British Wools, Cashmere and their famed John Smedley’s Sea Island Cotton. Always Made in England.
