Curtain heading styles

Pencil pleat
positioning of track or pole

These are folds gathered closely together to resemble a row of pencils laid side-by-side. They are created by pulling the cords on the heading tape and winding them around a cord tidy to keep the pleats in place. The width of pencil pleat curtains can be altered with the draw cord.

Double and triple pinch pleat
Double and triple pinch pleat

These curtains are suitable for tracks or poles, and feature gathered fabric with permanently sewn pinches along the header of the curtain. The double or triple pinches use more fabric than a pencil pleat, so therefore creating a fuller curtain. This type of curtain will only fit the window it has been measured for because the width is pre-set.

Eyelet

These are suitable only for curtain poles and have a row of eyelets, usually metal, which are 40mm in diameter. They give a much softer, wider fold.

Eyelets are available in a range of different sizes and finishes in store through our Bespoke made-to-measure service.

How to measure for eyelet curtains

  • Choose whether you want your curtain to hang from a track or a pole
  • Position your track or pole 15cm above your window with 15-20cm either side
  • Always fit the track or pole before taking measurements for curtains
  • Curtain measurements should be the width of the track or pole so they can be drawn right back, unless the window fits wall-to-wall

To be sure of the best possible fit, we suggest using a metal tape measure for accuracy.

  • Measure the total width of the pole (excluding the finials at the ends)
  • Only measure the window if it’s wall-to-wall

Please note: we will allow for hems, turnings and heading height so there is no need to incorporate this in your total measurement.

Before measuring the drop, decide where you want your curtains to fall.

  • Drop to sill – finish 1cm above the sill
  • Drop below sill – finish 10-15cm below, depending on radiator obstructions
  • Drop to floor – finish 1cm from the floor

If you want your curtains to drape and gather on the floor, add 10-15cm to the drop to create this effect

Measure the drop in 3 places across the pole as floors and sills may be uneven; use the shortest of these 3 measurements.

  • Drop to sill – finish 1cm above the sill
  • Drop below sill – finish 10-15cm below, depending on radiator obstructions

  • When your curtains arrive, make sure the adjustable curtain hooks sit in the middle to bottom of the heading so the track is hidden

Our 100% cotton lining is exceptional value.  It provides all the quality and drapability you’d expect from an entirely natural fabric.

Premium Thermal Blackout lining

Designed to block out light and protect delicate fabrics.  Blackout lining is great for bedrooms.  It also helps protect fabric fading in sunlight.

Basics Polycotton lining- Available in store only

Our polyester and cotton blended lining gives the look and feel of a standard lining but at a more affordable price.

Standard Soft Backed lining - Available in store only

A heavier weight lining with a brushed finish.  This lining offers improved drape and insulating properties, great for bedrooms or singled glazed windows.  A good lining to use for Roman blinds as it adds weight to the blind.   *not all fabrics are suitable for this lining.

Founded by William Morris in 1861, one of the 19th-century’s most celebrated textile designers, Morris & Co. is best known for wallpaper and fabric designs.

Morris championed handmade production, in contrast to the Victorian era’s push towards industrialisation. He wanted to provide affordable ‘art for all’ so the designs are intricate and beautiful, often drawing on the wildlife and nature he found around him.
