Party pants: how to wear trousers this festive season

How to wear trousers to a party

From velvet wide-legs to not-so-basic black slacks, festive dressing isn’t all about party dresses

Party fatigue is a December hazard. Truly, there’s nothing like a month loaded with festive shindigs and organised fun to make you want to glue yourself to the sofa. The idea that you have to dress the part for every engagement on that overflowing agenda of work drinks, nativity plays and awkward lunches, only seems to add to the exhaustion. After all, there’s only so many snappy little party dresses you can slip into before you find yourself staring longingly at your favourite pair of PJs.

A well chosen pair of trousers – comfortable, adaptable, easy to wear – won’t put an end to such social apathy but they might just take the edge off. Certainly, they'll make the whole thing slightly less traumatic. At least that’s my experience. Having long considered an oversized sweater to be the kindest and most comforting of party attire, this winter, I find a decent pair of trousers to be worthy of the same accolade. Undoubtedly, the right pair will serve as a sort of social security blanket. To find the party pants of your dreams, seek out tactile fabrications. Velvet is a great idea. Comfort is also paramount: pay close attention to fit.

But enough with the practicalities: this is a look you should have fun with. Here’s a guide to the most tempting trousers of the season – and how to wear them to a party.

Stride out from the crowd

’Tis the season that wallflowers can really come out of their shell with clothes that come with (sleigh) bells and whistles. A statement trouser – think tartan, winter florals and punchy shades – is the thinking woman’s way to stand out from the crowd. Team with a sharp jacket – the tuxedo is king – or an oversized knit with slouch appeal.

All that glitters

Are sequins your thing? What about a metallic finish? Whatever your choice, there’s a trouser to match this winter. Offset subtle sparkle with high quality basics – a fine gauge knit makes for a worthy companion. A classic white T-shirt worn under a sharp blazer is also a smart choice.

She wore blue velvet

Nothing says it’s Christmas like a pair of velvet trousers, but there’s more to this tactile turn of events than neutral hues. With options spanning boozy burgundy to regal teal, the options are endless. For the most up-to-date way to wear them, team your trousers of choice with a classic white T-shirt and a boxy cropped jacket. Cropped or ankle length styles may prove more flattering than most.

Back to black

There’s nothing basic about black trousers this winter, with everything from swooshy velvet and billowing satin providing solid ground for seasonal party shoppers. To find a pair of cocktail trousers with the potential to stay with you forever, focus on fit. A perfectly-cut pair of tuxedo pants are every bit as festive as a Hoover bag full of pine needles.
